Dulverton Celebrates 30 Years
In a busy world where many things come and go, the foresight of those who created Dulverton Waste Management is a solid testament to the benefits of Councils working smarter and not harder.
As the Councils of the Mersey Leven Region contemplated the needs of their communities in the early 1990’s, they embraced the ability to collaborate to solve a common challenge.
Over several years each of the Councils, Devonport, Kentish, Latrobe, Penguin and Ulverstone moved from partnerships with one another to a new Authority. The history of DWM starts from the seeds of shared roles and responsibilities, and that foundation remains.
The creation of the joint authority would not have been possible without the efforts of many.
DWM was established as a role model others would follow. It provides a service directly to the residents of the four owner Councils, but just as importantly, it supports a host of businesses in dealing with the by-product of their work. This involves disposing of a broad range of commercial and industrial waste, as well as construction and demolition materials.
From the outset it has been a business that was mindful of its neighbours – both human and animal.
It was designed to be a long-term solution with an early life estimate of 46 years increasing to almost 90 years, as the area and need has changed.
At the opening of the Organics Facility in July 2024, it was noted that being one team is how things get done and is part of the philosophy Dulverton embraces.
Since 1994 DWM has transformed from a clay pit to a modern landfilling operation. One that even in its birth recognised that the business of waste and resource recovery would continue to change.
One that started from a desire to minimise landfill and maximise safety to the surrounding area.
One that embraced the vision of yesterday’s waste is tomorrow’s resources, 30 years before that vision was written for the new DWM Strategic Plan.
A 30th Anniversary is often known as a Pearl Anniversary with the pearl meanings of purity, honesty and wisdom – these are the cornerstones of the work of Dulverton since the beginning.
